Black-necked Grebe

26th March 2025

A lovely bright and sunny morning with just a gentle but cooling breeze

Today saw a departure from my usual morning routine in that I ended up taking our dog for his morning walk on my own. It's not entirely unusual for either of us to do that but in my case it makes capturing any opportunistic photographs that little bit trickier.

Whenever we are on any nature reserve we always keep our dog on a lead so I was walking round with the lead in one hand, camera over my right shoulder, camera bag on my back and, thanks to our little dog, a poo bag in the same hand as the lead.

It was a bit of a struggle but when I noticed this pair of Black-necked Grebe I was able to capture a few images.

This was my first ever sighting of Black-necked Grebe so even though the photographs are not to the standard I would have liked, I was still quite pleased to have captured them. In fact some of the photographs look like they could have been taken using a mobile phone!

From the vantage point I had there was a bed of reeds ahead of me which unfortunately slightly obscure the female in the first photograph. There was also a small number of other photographers taking photographs and so with me having the dog I thought it best to stay well back.

Hopefully I will get another opportunity to capture some better photos of these stunning little birds.
