Ring Ouzel after more than 50 years
27th March 2025
I was standing around this morning watching birds flitting about when I noticed a thrush-like bird land on top of a bush to my left. I almost disregarded it but I raised the camera and noticed it had a distinctive white collar so I took a few photos before it promptly flew off. I immediately thought of a 'Ring Ouzel' but I had to check the images to confirm and yes, I am sure that's what it was....read more
Black-necked Grebe

Today saw a departure from my usual morning routine in that I ended up taking our dog for his morning walk on my own. It's not entirely unusual for either of us to do that but in my case it makes capturing any opportunistic photographs that little bit trickier....read more
Dunnocks and Redwings

There seems to have been a distinct lack of berries available for winter visitors such as the Redwing and Fieldfare this year and most of the photographs I've taken of them have been while they've been searching for food on the ground....read more
New home for the Woodpecker

Back on the 3rd March I noticed a Great Spotted Woodpecker high up on the trunk of a large tree and on closer inspection I discovered that it was actually at the entrance to a hole in the tree trunk....read more
Photographing Purple Sandpipers on Filey Brigg

Last week we took advantage of the more settled weather to spend a few days in Filey and, as it happened, we couldn't have chosen a better week for the time of year. We have visited the east coast on a couple of occasions recently and endured very strong winds and driving rain so it was a pleasure to be able to go out walking in some lovely warm sunshine for a change....read more
Godwit & Scoter on Hellifield Flashes

It was during the COVID-19 lockdown that I began to take a greater interest in bird photography but it was not until the restrictions were lifted that I was I able to get out with my camera to actually photograph something. At that time we had a static caravan at Hellifield near Settle which gave us easy access into the countryside while just across the main A65 road that runs through the village are Hellifield Flashes, a set of 3 flashes that are a haven for birds and wildlife and only a 2 minute walk from our caravan. It was there, on the 28th April 2021, that I encountered my first Black-tailed Godwit....read more
