About Me

sunrise from Filey Brigg

Yes that's actually me, standing on the top of Filey Brigg capturing another amazing sunrise. What a wonderful way to start the day!

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to get outdoors to witness such events and being the owner of an energetic West Highland Terrier means that me and my wife have a duty to go out every day whatever the weather may bring.

For people like me who would love to be able to draw or paint but have no ability to be able to do so, I consider taking photographs to be the next best thing and the availabilty of computer software enables me to create images that give me results I would otherwise find difficult to achieve.

I would describe myself as a 'leisure photographer' and I'm well aware that my images will not be to everyone's liking but I learned long ago that what matters above anything is what your images mean to yourself. I'm not here to try to sell anything and I'm not looking for 'likes' or 'thumbs up', I just enjoy taking photographs and creating images for my own enjoyment and sharing them in this, or indeed any other way, is an incentive to improve my photographic technique.

I began my photography journey in the very early 1980s when I purchased an Olympus OM1n 35mm film camera along with a Durst B30 black and white enlarger to begin developing my own film and making my own prints. With the advent of digital cameras I gradually upgraded to a number of Kodak digital cameras, a Minolta Dimage 7i, and eventually to a Canon EOS 20D and I have remained loyal to Canon equipment ever since, now taking along with me either a Canon R5 or R7, and occasionally both of them.

My primary interests in photography are birds and wildlife although the majority of my photographs have been taken while we are out walking our dog. I have seen people go to great lengths to capture photographs of birds and wildlife but I find that simply walking along presents some wonderful opportunities. I do occasionally try my hand at landscape photography or even some macro photography in and around the garden and I enjoy combining my photographic interest with that of model railways to add a greater sense of realism to my 1/76th scale images. When the weather isn't kind for getting out with the camera then I like to try creating images by blending a selection of my own photographs together.
